נפוץ באגן הים התיכון. תפרחתו הלבנה מבשרת את המשך הקיץ ושושנת העלים מופיעה עם בוא החורף. בצליו כגודל אשכולית ועליו רעילים, לכן אינו נפגע מרעיית צאן ובקר. בגבעה מתרבה מזרעיו.
