נֵצֵא הַשָּׂדֶה… נַשְׁכִּימָה, לַכְּרָמִים–נִרְאֶה אִם-פָּרְחָה הַגֶּפֶן פִּתַּח הַסְּמָדַר, הֵנֵצוּ הָרִמּוֹנִים; שָׁם אֶתֵּן אֶת-דֹּדַי, לָךְ. הַדּוּדָאִים נָתְנוּ-רֵיחַ, וְעַל-פְּתָחֵינוּ כָּל-מְגָדִים (שיר השירים ז, יב-יד).
וַיֵּלֶךְ רְאוּבֵן בִּימֵי קְצִיר-חִטִּים, וַיִּמְצָא דוּדָאִים בַּשָּׂדֶה, וַיָּבֵא אֹתָם, אֶל-לֵאָה אִמּוֹ; וַתֹּאמֶר רָחֵל, אֶל-לֵאָה, תְּנִי-נָא לִי, מִדּוּדָאֵי בְּנֵךְ. וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ, הַמְעַט קַחְתֵּךְ אֶת-אִישִׁי, וְלָקַחַת, גַּם אֶת-דּוּדָאֵי בְּנִי; וַתֹּאמֶר רָחֵל, לָכֵן יִשְׁכַּב עִמָּךְ הַלַּיְלָה, תַּחַת, דּוּדָאֵי בְנֵךְ. וַיָּבֹא יַעֲקֹב מִן-הַשָּׂדֶה, בָּעֶרֶב, וַתֵּצֵא לֵאָה לִקְרָאתוֹ וַתֹּאמֶר אֵלַי תָּבוֹא, כִּי שָׂכֹר שְׂכַרְתִּיךָ בְּדוּדָאֵי בְּנִי; וַיִּשְׁכַּב עִמָּהּ, בַּלַּיְלָה הוּא (בראשית ל, יד-טז).
מעשה ברחל שלבה לפרי בטן ייחל. היא נתנה (סחרה) עם אחותה צהובים תמורת אהובה ובפתח יוסף מתגלגל. באוניברסיטת הר הצופים בשנת 2000 נמצא שפירות הדודא מכילים את ההורמון הנקבי אסטרוגן. והשאלה היא איך ידעה רחל?
Let us go forth into the field…. Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see whether the vine hath budded, whether the vine-blossom be opened, and the pomegranates be in flower; there will I give thee my love. The mandrakes give forth fragrance, and at our doors are all manner of precious fruits, new and old (Song of Songs 7:12-14)
And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah: 'Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes.' And she said unto her: 'Is it a small matter that thou hast taken away my husband? And wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also?' And Rachel said: 'Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes.' And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said: 'Thou must come in unto me; for I have surely hired thee with my son's mandrakes.' And he lay with her that night. (Genesis 30:14-16)
Rachel’s heart aches for the fruit of her womb. So, she trades fruits of the mandrake with her sister in exchange for her love and her womb was opened, and Joseph was born.
In 2000 it was discovered by the Mount Scopus University that the fruits of the mandrake contain the female hormone, estrogen. The question is, how did Rachel know this?
