מקורו בארץ ישראל ודרום סוריה. תורבת לפני כ-6,000 שנה. במקרא הוא נזכר לראשונה בספור המבול וַתָּבֹא אֵלָיו הַיּוֹנָה לְעֵת עֶרֶב, וְהִנֵּה עֲלֵה-זַיִת טָרָף בְּפִיהָ (בראשית ח, יא) ובמקומות רבים נוספים. הָלוֹךְ הָלְכוּ הָעֵצִים, לִמְשֹׁחַ עֲלֵיהֶם מֶלֶךְ; וַיֹּאמְרוּ לַזַּיִת, מָלְכָה עָלֵינוּ. וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם, הַזַּיִת, הֶחֳדַלְתִּי אֶת-דִּשְׁנִי, אֲשֶׁר-בִּי יְכַבְּדוּ אֱלֹהִים וַאֲנָשִׁים; וְהָלַכְתִּי, לָנוּעַ עַל-הָעֵצִים (שופטים ט, ח-ט).
The tree’s origins are in Israel and southern Syria. This tree was first cultivated some 6,000 years ago. In the Bible it was first mentioned in the story of the flood: And the dove came in to him at eventide; and lo in her mouth an olive-leaf freshly plucked (Genesis 8:11) and thereafter it was mentioned numerous times.
The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive-tree: Reign thou over us.But the olive-tree said unto them: Should I leave my fatness, seeing that by me they honour God and man, and go to hold sway over the trees? (Judges 9:8-9)
