ישנן כמה אגדות עממיות המסבירות את שמו ואת צבעו של העץ. אחת האגדות מספרת כי רועה רב עם אביו. תוך כדי המריבה הניף הבן מטה על אביו והרגו. הענף הוכתם בדם והצמיח עץ שגזעו אדום וחלק. מכאן "קטלב" – קטל-אב. שם דומה מופיע גם בלשון הסורית לאחד ממיני הקטלב, ה-arbutus unedo: ܩܛܠ ܐܒܘܗܝ (בתעתיק "קטל אבוהי"), שפירושו "קטל אביו".
There are several folk tales about the origins of the name and the color of the tree. One of the legends tells of a shepherd who quarreled with his father. During the quarrel, the son knocked his father down and killed him. The branch was stained with blood and grew a tree whose bark was red and smooth. Hence, the tree got its Hebrew name “Ketel-Av” a combination of the words “killed” and “father”. There is a similar name in the Syrian language for one of the species of Madrones, the Arbutus unedo (strawberry tree)ܩܛܠ ܐܒܘܗܝ , (transliterated “Ketel Avuhai”), meaning “killed his father”.
